Knitter’s Spotlight

Name: Debbie McPhillips

Years knitting: Seven

Rav id: Debbie4

Currently working on: Rasta Neckwarmer

Who taught you to knit?  Caroline Hershey, owner of Carodan Farm Yarn Shop, in a community ed class!

What are your favorite colors to knit with?  Blue, green, purple

What is your current favorite yarn?  Dragonfly Fibers Traveller and Madelinetosh Tosh DK.

How would you describe your personal style and how knitwear fits into it?  I like to think I’m hipper than I probably am (and I wish I was less hippy than I am, too!). I love to accessorize with knitted items but I also love a comfy cardigan. I used to sew a lot of my clothes so I love it when someone compliments something I’ve made and they are surprised (shocked!) when I say “I made it”.

What have you knitted that you especially love to wear?  Several infinity loop cowls that I made last year. I need to replace the one that I wore the most because my friend’s mom literally took it off my neck when I visited her in late January and wouldn’t give it back!

How big is your yarn stash? Can we see photos?  Eclectic is the word I would use to describe my stash. I have “sq”s (sweater quantities) of several different bases (Madelinetosh DK and Vintage, Malabrigo Twist and Chunky, Noro Silk Garden, and some indie dyers like Dragonfly Fibers and Neighborhood Fiber Company). I also have a lovely “souvenir yarn collection” of single and double skeins of pretty yarn that I buy when I’m travelling or at a fiber festival and just cannot leave it behind. I have an enormous amount of fingering weight yarn that will never become socks, but might become shawls. And of course I have some yarn that I bought when I first started knitting and even some holdovers from my crocheting past that now I look at and go, “what did I ever see in this yarn?” that I really need to clear out of the stash and send to more appreciative homes. Perfectly wonderful yarns in most cases, but my tastes in patterns and projects and bases has just changed as I’ve gained life and knitting experience. I prefer you not show my stash for fear of giving my husband a heart attack.

Some of Debbie’s recent FOs:

Earflap Hat Pattern Generator

Waiting for Winter Mittens and Fingerless Mitts

Surplus Stripes Cowl
